Well it has now been and gone... another event organised and out of the way - I felt pretty shattered last night but everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. The speakers: Dr Ishwara Chandra, Dr David Whitehouse, Prof. John Brown, John Dobson and Dr Allan Chapman where excellent! Many thanks to them. Two US scientists, John C Mather and George F Smoot, have won the 2006 Nobel Physics Prize. This is for their work on the anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background radiation . Well done to them as this is a very interesting and important discovery that has fuelled discussions on the nature of the Universe. For more see: [bbc.co.uk]

For a while the status of the planet orbiting Eps Eri has been questioned. The radial velocity curve was far from impressive but there was definetly something interesting there. Now, after observations with the Hubble Space Telescope it looks that finally the system will be confirmed to have a planet in it! This is good for me as my research concerns this planet (more at some point in the future, I am sure!). So the closest known extrasolar planet does appear to exist, yay! I am a veggie, there is no doubt of this. I do, however, believe that if you are going to eat meat (I have many friends who do - and family!!) then you should try and be nice to the animal. NASA's twin Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatories mission, known as STEREO, successfully launched Wednesday at 8:52 p.m. EDT from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla. This is rather good news for the research group I am a member of since the group designed and built some of the Heliospheric Imager instruments. See [http://stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov/new.shtml] for more.
