I gave a talk at [Doncaster Astronomical Society] tonight. Nice group of people. They happily listened to me rant on about magnetic fields and radio astronomy. This is a talk I've only given once before, a few weeks back at Walsall AS so it still has a bit of altering before its pretty solid. I mostly talked about how you can go about detecting magnetic fields with radio telescopes. Its always fun discussing the different types of radio telescopes and talking about the fun little things, such as the wildlife around different telescopes and what to look out for. In today's talk I spoke a lot about the Arecibo observatory and how we are working on detecting the magnetic field of the Milky Way with GALFACTS. The data volumes we are coping with, I think, always sounds impressive - something like 2 PB (yes that's Peta Bytes) in total. I ended off the talk with some stuff on the Square Kilometre Array.. and though 2 PB sounds impressive with GALFACTS its just a spit in the ocean for the SKA. Oh Doncaster AS meet right next to this beautiful building:
